Day 2, 30 December : Ilulissat- Sermermiut hike & Northern light tour
During the morning we will hike up and into the Sermemiut Valley, which probably will be one of the most beautiful hikes you will ever experience. It is not hard, it is not long, but the views over Kangia Icefjord is a sight to behold! The place is on the UNESCO list of world heritage sites, and it is here where you can experience with your own ice, the “emptying” of ice into the ocean from the Ice Cap. 10% of all ice coming from the Ice Cap, goes through this narrow straight. On our way to the fjord, we will come across very old Inuit settlements. Please be aware that there will be no sunlight by the end of december, to the tour will take place in Twilight, but you will still be able to sense the icebergs from land.
We have lunch in town on our own.
Later afternoon or early evening we will head of searching for Northern light. Your guide will tell you about the myths and histories, and give you insight in a life in darkness by the egde of the world.
Day 3, 31 December : Ilulissat – Icefiord cruise
this morning it is time to take to the seas, and we will depart for the Ice Fjord cruise. At slow speeds we will cruise through the waters littered with icebergs of all shapes and sizes. It gets cold at sea, so take extra warm cloth. Use the layer system, so you can alway put on or take off another layer of cloth.
New year dinner at a local hotel. The dinner is not set, but we promise you, that you will have a lovely evening at the small hotel restaurant. Spend an evening with view of fireworks and hopefully also northern lights.
Day 4, 01 January : Ilulissat – free day
Today you are on your own in Ilulissat. Spend a day at leisure. Do an individual hike to the UNESCO area or walk or relax at home. We strongly recommend another hike to the Sermermiut Valley – try to check out the yellow route that has the most amazing view of the Icebergs. Upon your return you can heat up in our sauna. The sauna visit is included in your stay. You could consider to rent the sauna on private basis if you wish.
Remember we don´t have tv in our guesthouse, and shops might be close today. Internet however is accessible but speed and acces can be limited on location.
Day 5, 02 January : Ilulissat – Dog slegde adventure
Time to one of the high light of your stay. From your meeting point you will be picked up by a small bus at the hotel and driven to the dogsledges stands, from where the tour departs. The dogs are very eager to get going, and can’t wait; this is what they love the most. We will leave town and go whereever weather permits.
Depending on the weather situation, it get’s cold while being out on the sledge, so remember to bring warm clothes. You can rent traditional sealskin garments, which are very warm and made for this climate. (Rental for a sealskin set is €48).
The tour takes approx. 2 hours and will be operated by a local musher. Language skills in english can not be expected, but an authentic experience in the greenlandic nature with a local can be guaranteed.
