DAY TO DAY PROGRAM
Day 1: Arrival to Reykjavik
Arrival in Iceland. Pick up rental car at Keflavik international airport and drive to Reykjavik to your accommodation. Depending on arrival time optional visit to Blue lagoon is possible along the way. We will be happy to help you book your entrance in advance. Drive approx 50 km.
Day 2: The Golden circle – Hvolsvollur
We start the drive around the country by visiting three of Iceland’s best-known sights: Þingvellir (Thingvellir) national park, the site of the first parliament, founded in 930 next to Lake Laugarvatn. Afterwards we visit the Geysir geothermal area with abundance of hot springs. You will see the most active of the geysers, Strokkur which spouts a coloumn of water into the air every 5-10 minutes. Nearby you will find the Gullfoss waterfall – the Golden Falls which drops in two cascades deep into the gorge of Hvita glacial river. After seeing these amazing highlights, you continue towards the southern coast and end the day in the area of Hvolsvollur. Drive approx 320 Km.
Day 3: Seljalandsfoss – Skogar – Reynisfjare and Kirkjubaejarklaustur
Today you drive east along the south coast making stops at the inspiring Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls, the black sand beaches of Reynisfjara and you can choose to explore the option of hiking or snowmobiling on Solheimajokull glacier. Continue across the sands and moss-covered lava fields towards Kirkjubaejarklaustur where you will spend the night. Accommodation in the area. Drive approx. 200 km
Day 4: Skaftafell – Jokularslon – East Fjords
Continue east across the sands of glacier rivers and lava fields towards Skaftafell National Park, an oasis of vegetation surrounded by mountains and glaciers. Continuing along Europe´s largest glacier, Vatnajokull before you reach Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon and the famous „Diamond Beach“. If lucky, we might spot a seal near the shore or even in the lagoon. Consider to add on a boat tour on the glacier lagoon. We drive further towards Hofn and continue along the Eastfjords towards Djupivogur/Breiddalsvik where we stay overnight. Drive approx. 400km
Day 5: Egilsstadir – Dettifoss – Husavik
We drive further along the Eastfjords, through Egilsstadir and the green Jokuldalur valley with numerous waterfalls dropping from the top of the hills alongside the road. Then across the desert land of Modrudalsoraefi towards Dettifoss, Europe’s largest waterfall located in the gorge of Jokulsargljufur national park. We continue north towards a horseshoe shaped canyon created by the wild forces of glacial river in pre-historic times. Driving around the Tjornes peninsula we finally reach Husavik. Accommodation in Husavik or in the Lake Myvatn area for the night. Drive approx 480 km.
Day 6: Myvatn – Godafoss – Akurery
Start the day by visiting the Whale centre or the Exploration museum if you please. Then drive to Lake Myvatn and spend the day exploring the numerous natural wonders of the Myvatn volcanic area with several possibilities for short hikes and a chance for a relaxing bath in the Nature Baths geothermal lagoon. Visit Godafoss waterfall in the late afternoon and then travel directly to Akureyri, via the recently opened tunnel (tunnel toll must be paid locally), or take the longer road around, by crossing the Vikurskard mountain pass. Accommodation in Akureyri. Drive approx 200 km.
Day 7: Akureryri – Skagafjordur – Borgafjordur
Drive north along western coastal road of Eyjafjordur with panoramas of the high mountains and glacial valleys . You will be passing through Dalvik, Olafsfjordur and three tunnels laters, we reach the charming fishing village of Siglufjordur. Then continue to Skagafjordur with views of the islands of Malmey and Drangey and continue towards Blonduos. Passing through the green valleys of the north west we reach Borgarfjordur where we overnight. Drive approx. 400 km.
Day 8: Snaefellsness – Reykjavik
A full daytour to one of the most beautiful parts of Iceland, the Snaefellsnes peninsula, which is often playfully called „Little Iceland“, as you can find all natural phenomena in Iceland there: lava fields, volcanic craters, glacier, waterfalls, sandy beaches, charming fishing towns, bird cliffs and more. On Snaefellsnes peninsula you will also find one of the most photographed Icelandic mountains – Mr.Kirkjufell. you will end the day back in Reykjavik for your last overnight in Iceland. Drive approx. 420 km.
Day 9: Departure
Drive to Keflavik airport in time for check in for your international flight. If your flight departs late afternoon, then you have the possibility to add an optional whale watching boat tour in the morning, drive around the Reykjanes peninsula or visit the Blue Lagoon before dropping of the rental car at Keflavik airport.
Possibility for add-on: Greenland or the Faroe Islands.
