DAY TO DAY PROGRAM
Day 1, Thursday : Copenhagen-Kangerlussuaq, ice cap visit
Morning flight from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq Greenland. Upon arrival you will meet our local representative who will take you to one of the two hostels, Old Camp or Polar Lodge. After check-in your first trip will start. You will in 4 wd buses drive towards the huge icecap, covering around 80% of Greenland. If weather permits, you will get to stand on the ice cap before we return back over the tundra with view to glaciers and hopefully see some wildlife as well.
Day 2, Friday : Ilulissat – City walk
After breakfast you will continue north to the city of icebergs, Ilulissat. Upon arrival you will take a taxi to our cosy guesthouse, where you will stay for the next couple of days. Our guesthouse is located beautifully with a view of the ice fiord. You will arrange self-catering during your stay. If you are more friends or family members traveling together, we will do our best to accommodate you in a private house.
Your local guide will welcome you and offer you a city tour of Ilulissat.
Towels and linnen are included in your stay. It will be possible to add-on a breakfast voucher to the next door Hotel Icefiord.
Day 3, Saturday: Icefiord cruise and northern light
This morning it is time to go out to have a closer look at the huge icebergs, when sailing out to the ice fjord on an ice fjrod cruise. At slow pace we will cruise through the waters littered with icebergs of all shapes and sizes. It gets cold at sea, so take extra warm cloth on. Use the multi-layer system, so you can alway put on or take off another layer of cloth if you feel like it.
We will have lunch on our own.
Later afternoon or early evening we will head out searching for that northern light. Your guide will tell you about the myths and stories, and give you an insight of life in darkness by the edge of the world.
Day 4, Sunday: Ilulissat – Sermermiut hike & sauna
During the morning we will hike up and into the Sermemiut Valley, which probably will be one of the most beautiful hikes you will ever experience. It is not hard, it is not long, but the views over Kangia icefjord is a sight to behold! The place is on the UNESCO-list of world heritage sites, and this is the place, where you can experience with your own ice, the “emptying” of ice into the ocean from the Ice Cap. 10% of all ice coming from the Greenlandic ice cap, goes through this narrow straight. On our way to the fjord, we will come across a very old Inuit settlement.
Please be aware that there will be no sunlight by the end of December, so the tour will take place in twilight, but you will still be able to sense the icebergs from land.
Remember to bring packed lunch and snacks along, if you want to continue hiking along the ice fjord by yourself. We will serve a hot drink during the tour.
Upon your return we will heat up our sauna with a panoramic view over the Disko bay for you to enjoy. If you are lucky you will see that northern light while sitting warm and comfy.
Day 5, Monday: Ilulissat – Kangerlussuaq – Copenhagen
Individual taxi transfer to the airport. Flight from Ilulissat to Kangerlussuaq and further on to Copenhagen with expected arrival at 20:00 or 21:30.
