DAY TO DAY PROGRAM
Day 1, Wednesday: Arrival to Greenland
Morning flight from Reykjavik to Kulusuk. From here you will continue your journey with helicopter to Tasiilaq, the main town of the east coast. You will get transfer to your accommodation for a welcome meeting and briefing about the upcomming days, and possible rental equipment. You will have the rest of the day for leisure. Explore the small town with approx. 2.000 people on your own. Dinner will be served at your accommodation, prepared by a local chef. Accommodation: You will be lodged in a house in the centre of Tasiilaq. The houses accommodate two people per room, in single beds. The house has a living room, a fully equipped kitchen and bathroom with shower and flushing toilet.
Day 2, Thursday: Dog sledge adventure begins
After breakfast we will start todays dog slegde tour, travelling over the “King Oscars Fiord” up to the large inland lake of Qordlortoq. From here we will have a short break before we continue to our little hut in the middle of the arctic nature. Here we will have a break with refreshments preparing to rice 500 meter above sea level to enjoy the view of the second largest fiord in Greenland. The descent ends by the edge of the icefiord. Accomodation: You will be lodged in a basic but very charming mountain hut, where sleeping is in sleeping bag accommodation. Toilet is in an ‘outhouse’ and there is no shower.
Day 3, friday: Day at leisure in the arctic nature
Today you can explore the beautiful surroudings or just relax in the peacefulness. Join your guide on a snowshoe hike if you wish, or stay in the hut for a day of leisure. As darkness approaches remember to keep an good eye open for Northern lights. being far away from town, you will have perfect conditions if the sky is clear. Accomodation: You will be lodged in a basic but very charming mountain hut, where sleeping is in sleeping bag accommodation. Toilet is in an ‘outhouse’ and there is no shower.
Day 4, Saturday: Arrival to Tiniteqilaq
After breakfast, we will visit the small settlement of Tiniteqilaq. The dogs will take us for this adventure and today’s journey is hard work ascending and descending step fells with the sledges. We will pass glaciers, inland ice cap and ice fiords before we reach our destination Tiniteqilaq in the far distance. We will ofcause have several stops and breaks along the way for photography and refreshments.
We spend the night in a newly built mountain hut in the village. If time and weather allows there might be a chance to join the local hunters for an afternoon boat ride. Dinner will be served locally with a local family. Traditional greenlandic food is most likely on the menu. Se prepare for an authentic meal such as seal or whale. Accommodation: The hut in the settlement has wooden beds with proper mattresses. Sleeping arrangements are on sleeping bag basis. There is a possibility to take a shower in the local service house.
Day 5, Sunday: Glaciers and fishing
After breakfast we head out for the 10 kilometer long Kugarmit valley. Today, we will pass several large glaciers and cross several frozen lakes. The tour ends at the Imaila fjord. We then continue on the frozen fjord towards the closed settlement of Qernetivartivit we will look for a good spot for ice fishing and try our luck catching the Greenlandic cod fish or halibut. Accomodation: The Imaila hut is a basic mountain hut in an incredible setting by the sea ice, with sleeping bag accommodation. There is an outdoor toilet, but no shower.
Day 6, Monday: Return to Tasiilaq
Today we return to our starting point – Tasiilaq. Our journey, takes us across high glaciers which is a hard job for both men and dog but after approx. 4-5 hours we should be able to see sight of the town again. In the evening, we all come together for dinner at out accommodation, prepared by a local chef. Accomodation: You will be staying in the same house as you were prior to the start of the trip, with all modern facilities for your comfort.
Day 7, Tuesday: Day at leisure in Tasiilaq
Today, your will have the day at your leisure to enjoy the sights of Tasiilaq. Visit the small waterfall outside town – ask for a tour of the local filatelia or visit the cosy little town museum located in the old church. Accomodation: You will be staying in the same house as the night prior.
Day 8, Wednesday: Departure back to Iceland
Today, we say out final goodbyes before you board the helicopter that will bring you to Kulusuk, where you will board your international flight back to Iceland.
