DAY TO DAY PROGRAM
Day 1: Arrival to Greenland, visit to the ice cap
Departure from Copenhagen at 09:00 and arrival i Kangerlussuaq 09.50 local time. You will be meet in the airport by your local guide, who will arrange transfer to your accommodation, Polar Logde / Old Camp.
Early afternoon we embark on a journey to the famous Ice Cap, which has its beginning about 40km from Kangerlussuaq. The trip goes through very beautiful Greenlandic landscapes, which have been formed by the movement of the ice sheet throughout thousands of years. The mountains are rounded, and it’s easy to see the effects and strong forces of the ice. If weather permits we will be able to walk up onto the ice cap itself. At its highest point, the Greenlandic Ice Cap is more than 3km thick! On the way there will be plenty of opportunity to spot wildlife; musk ox, raindeer, snowhare and the elusive snow fox.
In the evening we recommend dinner at Restaurant Roklubben, which is located at the border of the very scenic Lake Ferguson, a short drive from Kangerlussuaq. Transfer to the restaurant is included. If the weather is clear, this is a great spot to experience the Northern Lights. You can book your table in the reception upon arrival.
Day 2: Sisimiut, city tour by bus
Breakfast at the lodge before departure towards Sisimiut – the second biggest town in Greenland, located with an amazing view of the open sea, and with a huge back country that offers excursions on dog slegde, snow scooters, skiing or snow shoeing.
You will be meet by the hotel staff in the airport for transfer to Hotel Sisimiut. Your host will make you a briefing upon arrival, and already the same afternoon you will join a city tour in bus, that will show you the high lights of town – including a visit to the famous local store Qiviut, that produces and sells wool from musk oxen, a quite unique wool perfect designed to keep you warm during the cold Greenlandic winter.
Back at the hotel you will have a 2 course welcome dinner included.
Day 3: Dog sledge
Breakfast at the hotel. Today another amazing tour awaits you, as you will join a local musher for a dog sledge adventure in the back country of Sisimiut.
The back country just became part of the UNESCO world heritage list in 2018, and is located right at the Polar circle. You can rent warm clothes at the hotel for DKK 150 per day. The tours is a half day tour for 2 persons sharing a sledge with a local musher. Dog sledging is not recommended for persons with back issues. You can read more about dogledging here.
Day 4 – Day at leisure
Breakfast at the hotel. Today you can choose between several different excursions in Sisimiut – or you can simply spend a day at leisure in town. We recommend one of below tours in case you are looking for another adventure.
- Monster sledge: Enjoy the stunning mountain landscape which surrounds Sisimiut in Greenland’s only snowmobile sleigh. Nature is right outside our front door, and you will very quickly get a sense of the difference between civilization and the wilderness. Experience it all on the Winter safari, while sitting comfortably in the monster sled and enjoying nature’s grandeur from the valley to the mountain top.
The route goes through the local Sisimiormiut’s winter playground. Here the locals cross country ski, go dog sledding and drive snowmobiles – and yet the area seems enormous and deserted. On the way back from the ski lift, we will halt at the plateau near the lake to enjoy the view over the city and David Strait. On the tour there will be several stops, where there is plenty of time to take photos and enjoy the nature, and cost DKK 800 per person.
- If you want a more individual adventure we recommend a snow scooter tour. We offer different options – from 1 hour introduction tours to several hours including ice fishing, so please feel free to contact us for prices and descriptions.
